Midshipman Merlin H. Suggs III, son of Merlin and Adelle Suggs of Bath, recently participated in Acceptence Day Ceremonies at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., on Sept. 15. The event marks the official acceptance of the freshman class into the ranks of the academy’s Regiment of Midshipmen. A graduate of Morse High School, Suggs was nominated to attend the academy by Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Air Force Airman Adam D. Cochrane, son of Kathryne and Dana Cochrane of Bowdoinham, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the Mt. Ararat High School graduate studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. Cochrane earned distinction as an honor graduate.

Navy Seaman Jonathan P. Saucier, son of Susan Saucier of Brunswick and Donald E. Saucier of Augusta, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, the Brunswick High School graduate completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Price of Orr’s Island, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, the Mt. Navy Reserve Constructionman Recruit Bradley J. Merrill, son of Sabrina Bouchard of Topsham, recently graduated from the Equipment Operator Course. During the 90-day course with the Naval Construction Training Center Detachment in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., the Mt. Ararat High School graduate learned basic operating techniques of common construction and automotive equipment and basic combat skills. Equipment operators receive additional training during homeport duty.
