Air Force Airman Derek L. Elwell, son of Fred and Kim Elwell of Arrowsic, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies. He performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training. He worked on rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Elwell is a 2007 graduate of Morse High School in Bath.

Navy Ensign Joel Strong, son of Dorothy and David Strong of Topsham, recently reported for duty at Kingsville (Texas) Naval Air Station. Strong is a 2002 graduate of Mount Ararat High School in Topsham, and joined the Navy in May 2006. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2006 from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
