North downs South in 15s tournament
BATH — The Babe Ruth District 15-and-under All-Star Tournament was completed on Monday as MC South took on MC North for the title.
Teams from Brunswick, Ararat and Lisbon also participated in the double-elimination tournament.
In the championship game, MC North scored four times in the second inning and held on for a 7-5 victory.
Sam Predham singled twice, Adam Landwehr doubled and singled to lead the MC North offense, while Rocky Fraunce and Billy Joyce handled the pitching (eight hits, two strikeouts, five walks). Kyle Olehnik and Joyce each doubled, while Joe Nelson and Tony Campagnoli both singled.
Everett Martin led MC South with a triple and a single. Ryan Peters doubled, Bryant Matthews and Bo McLain singled twice each, and Brandon Reilly singled.
Jason Weatherbee, Geno Wentworth and Buddy Simmons combined to allow eight hits and four walks.
MC North 6, MC South 5
The tournament began with a good one as MC North scored a sixth-inning run to break a 5-5 tie on Thursday.
Predham had two singles for MC North. Chris Merry tripled and Campognoli singled.
Landwehr started on the mound for MC North. He allowed five runs on five hits in five innings of work, with eight strikeouts. Joyce came on to pitch two scoreless innings on one hit with one strikeout for the win.
Matthews led MC South with a pair of singles, while Simmons, Weatherbee and Martin each singled. Reilly chipped in with a triple, and went the distance on the mound with 10 strikeouts and five walks.
Brunswick 8, Ararat 3
Luke Carter held Ararat to four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in picking up the win for Brunswick.
Up 2-0 in the fifth, Brunswick scored five runs to put the game away.
Alex Emery, Carter and Chris Bruno each singled for Brunswick, which took advantage of four walks and four errors to score its runs.
Torrey Charnock led Ararat with a pair of singles, while Jordan Daigle and Zach Pratt each singled once.
Charnock, D.J. Cole and Joe Ashouwak pitched for Ararat with seven strikeouts.
MC North 7, Lisbon 0
Fraunce shut out the Lisbon offense on four hits as MC North advanced in the winner’s bracket.
Fraunce walked four and struck out eight in a dominating performance, and received two singles and a double from teammate Landwehr to pace the offense.
Nelson singled three times, Olehnik doubled, and Merry and Andrew Flanigan each singled for MC North.
Derrick Lycette, Aaron Pelletier, Tyler Derry and Mason Smith (double) had the hits for Lisbon, which had three pitchers combine on four strikeouts and four walks.
MC South 10, Ararat 0
In the first elimination game on Saturday, MC South scored a pair of runs in five of the six innings to down Ararat.
Buddy Simmons and Merritt Wotton led MC South with two hits. Weatherbee, Reilly, Merritt and Adam Lynch each doubled, while Wentworth, Martin and Reilly picked up a single each.
Simmons earned the mound win, combining with reliever Dalton Leeman on six strikeouts, six walks and two hits allowed.
Pinette and Daigle each singled for Ararat. Tyler Geyer, Ashouwak, Charnock and Pratt handled the mound duties with six strikeouts and five walks.
MC North 6, Brunswick 3
In a winner’s bracket game on Saturday, MC North erased a 3-2 deficit with two runs in the fifth in moving to the championship round.
Nelson went the distance for MC North He allowed six hits, six walks and picked up five strikeouts. He also led the offense with a pair of singles, along with Fraunce and Olehnik, who also doubled.
Emery, Luke Carter, Jason Carter, Brett Lancaster, Chad Kousky and Favreau each singled for Brunswick, while Kousky and Emery combined to allow 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
MC South 5, Lisbon 0
Wentworth and Weatherbee held Lisbon to one hit in moving on.
The duo combined on five strikeouts and didn’t walk a hitter. The only hit for Lisbon was a single by Andrew Pelletier.
Bryant Matthews led MC South’s 10-hit attack with a single and a double, while Reilly singled twice. Picking up a single each were Weatherbee, Wotton, Simmons, Leeman, Martin and Wentworth.
Ryan Riordan and Derry pitched for Lisbon with three strikeouts and five walks.
MC South 9, Brunswick 2
After a 2-2 tie through one inning, MC South rode the strong pitching of Simmons and Weatherbee in eliminating Brunswick on Sunday.
Wotton doubled and singled to pace MC South’s 10-hit offense. Simmons singled three times, Matthews twice, and Weatherbee, Martin and Lynch each singled once.
Simmons and Weatherbee had six strikeouts and three walks.
Brunswick was led offensively by Trent Anderson (two singles). Luke Carter and Bruno each singled once, and Zach Lavoie, Emery and Bruno combined on the mound (two strikeouts, six walks).
MC South 2, MC North 1
MC South forced Monday’s championship “if” game by scoring a run in the sixth inning and holding on.
Reilly went the distance for MC South, allowing four hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Weatherbee doubled and singled, Wotton and Martin singled, and Simmons doubled.
Landwehr was the hard-luck loser for MC North. He had six strikeouts and two walks, and allowed just five hits.
Nelson, Flanagan, Campagnoli and Merry each singled for MC North.
