| Harvest Bowl football action — The 2009 Maine Youth Football League Northern Division Harvest Bowl was held this past Saturday at the Brunswick Area Youth Football Field at the Topsham Fairgrounds. In the fourth- and fifth-grade division, the Brunswick Patriots opened up play with a 20-0 loss to Boothbay. The Brunswick 49ers lost to the Cumberland Bears 14-6 and the Brunswick Packers defeated the Brunswick Ravens. The tournament was postponed due to heavy rains until this Saturday, Nov. 31, when the Brunswick Packers will take on Gray in the second round. USM knocked out of tennis tourney
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Third-seeded Bridgewater State won a key doubles match en route to a 5-3 victory over the sixth-seeded University of Southern Maine women’s tennis team in the Little East quarterfinals on Thursday.
USM freshman and former Mt. Ararat High School student/athlete Tegan Talbot earned a point for the Huskies, taking her No. 3 singles match, 6-0, 6-4 over Paulina Ucher.
Bartlett helps Bentley to field hockey win
WALTHAM, Mass — Brunswick native Courtney Bartlett scored the winning goal leading the Bentley University field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday.
Bentley, ranked sixth in Division II, improved to 14-4 overall, 8-2 in the NE-10.
Bartlett’s goal came just 56 seconds into the game.
Hyde cross country takes on sister school
WOODSTOCK, Conn. — Hyde-Bath took a long road trip on Saturday to take on its sister school, Hyde-Woodstock, in a cross country meet.
The Phoenix boys, led by top finisher Zach Pfosi, won the meet 22-35, while Woodstock won the girls meet 18-41.
In the boys meet, Pfosi crossed the finish line in 19:48, well ahead of runner-up Kevin Blanco (20:32) of Woodstock.
Other Phoenix finishers were Ryan Sunshine (third, 20:59), Richard Stites (fourth, 21:18), Sol Melendy (sixth, 22:49) and John Garvey (eighth, 23:20).
The Woodstock girls took the top four spots in the girls meet, led by first-place finisher Haruka Koda in 26:05.
The top finisher for the Phoenix was Emma Falkinburg, who crossed the line in 29:04 for fifth overall.
Other Hyde-Bath finishers were Barbie Gimbel (sixth, 29:05), Hailun Ni (seventh, 29:31), Lilly Smith (11th, 31:39) and Jessica Smith (12th, 32:30).
Hyde-Bath is scheduled to compete in the MAISAD Cross Country Championships at the University of Maine-Augusta on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Hoffman scores twice for Emmanuel soccer
BOSTON — Emmanuel College freshman Melanie Hoffman scored two goals leading the Emmanuel College women’s soccer team to a 4-3 victory over St. Joseph’s College on Saturday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
The former Mt. Ararat High School student/athlete tallied her goals 12 minutes apart to erase a 1-0 deficit as the Saints (12-5-1 overall, 9-2-1 GNAC) handed St. Joseph’s its first conference loss of the season (8-1-2 GNAC, 9-5-2 overall).
Hoffman has five goals this season.
Hyde jayvee girls nip Woodstock, 3-2
BATH — The Hyde School-Bath jayvee girls soccer squad hosted Hyde-Woodstock on Saturday with the Bath squad prevailing, 3-2.
Woodstock recorded the first goal, a beautiful cross from the right corner of the field that managed to find the top left corner of the net as the first half ended 1-0.
Kayla Sheldon of Hyde-Bath found the net next, tying the score at 1-1. Sheldon came through again, slipping past the Woodstock defense for her second goal and a 2-1 Phoenix lead.
Woodstock came back to tie it, but Emily Rose scored the game winner for Bath with six minutes remaining for the one-goal victory.
Jane Miller and Julia Herman anchored the Phoenix defense, while Maeve O’Sullivan also stood out.
The team faces Kents Hill on Wednesday.
UMF, Husson soccer girls in action
BANGOR — Husson College capped off regular season North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a 4-0 win over visiting University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 13-5 (6-1 NAC) and the Beavers fell to 7-9-1 (3-3-1 NAC). Husson is unbeaten on its Boucher Field (9-0).
Husson controlled the first half to the tune of a 10-3 shot advantage, but the game remained scoreless thanks to several nice saves by Farmington netminder McKell Barnes of Durham, who finished with 12 stops.
Husson scored three early goals to take control in the second half, and Megan Clement of Brunswick scored the last Eagles goal to complete the scoring.
Mt. Ararat frosh football tops Dragons
TOPSHAM — On Thursday, an energized Mt Ararat High School freshman football team won a close and hard-fought 26-22 battle against rival Brunswick.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Dragons jumped ahead, only to be answered the Eagles, who trailed 22-20 at the half. Ryan Smith led the first half Mt. Ararat charge with three touchdowns on runs of six and 12 yards and a 25 yard scamper after hauling in a 30-yard pass the play before.
Smith had big play offensive support throughout the half from quarterback Ryan Lathrop (45-yard run, 30-yard pass completion), Brandon Wyatt (30-yard run) and John Dietland (30-yard kickoff return, key first-down runs).
The Eagles took the lead on a 50-yard run by Wyatt to jump ahead 26-22, and the Mt. Ararat defense did the rest from there, shutting out the Dragons in the second half.
The Eagles’ Kevin Nolan made two key interceptions, and strong defense and hard tackles were turned in by Joe Burr and Dietland.
Caputi shines for Holderness football
BATH — The Holderness School defeated Hyde School 24-14 on Saturday in football action.
Jamie McNulty caught two touchdown catches thrown by Brunswick’s Mac Caputi to lead the Holderness offense, and Steve Parsons and Sean Harrison both rushed for a touchdown.
Hyde boys soccer gets past CVA
BATH — Hyde School toppled Carrabasset Valley Academy Saturday 4-2 in boys soccer action.
The first goal was scored 15 minutes into the match when Cody Vickery placed a shot in the top right corner of the net.
Henry Killeen made it 2-0 when he connected on a loose ball from 12-yards out.
To round out the first-half scoring, Ryan Connolly converted a direct kick from 18 yards out as the Phoenix carried a 3-0 lead into the break.
CVA made it interesting after halftime, taking advantage of a letdown by Hyde. CVA scored twice, including a rebound off a direct kick after Hyde netminder Jake Morrow made the initial save, to cut the deficit to 3-2.
With five minutes to play, Hyde put it away. Connolly sent a direct kick off the post with the rebound coming to Juno Ra, who calmly placed it into the net.
Conor Braun played a strong game on defense.
Hyde is unbeaten in its last four games heading into an important MAISAD match against Kents Hill on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
