BATH — The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference swimming championships came to the Bath Family YMCA on Saturday with the Brunswick High School boys coming out top, while the Morse girls were queens of the pool in easily outdistancing Messalonskee.

“The boys were very consistent in placing well in the top six, but the difference ultimately lies in how the second group of six does when 12 places are being scored,” said Brunswick coach David Bright after being tossed in the pool after the meet was over as his team celebrated. “On the girls side, we were seeded fourth or fifth and finished third, so that was a great performance. Overall, I’m very pleased.”

“My girls had a very good meet, with Emily Buczkowski setting a team record in the backstroke, and we won all three relays,” said Morse coach Todd Marco. “We were hoping for second in the boys race, but I have to hand it to Messalonskee for swimming a very good meet.”

The Shipbuilder girls cruised to the title with 308 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Messalonskee, which finished with 206 points. Brunswick’s 164 was third, while the Mt. Ararat girls came in seventh (125 points).

Cony’s 147 points was good fourth, followed by Edward Little (141) and Lewiston (128).

KVAC boys

On the boys side, Brunswick’s 288 points was tops, while Messalonskee again finished second, holding off Morse, 220-215 despite the Shipbuilders winning the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The Eagles finished second in the race to secure the runner-up spot.

Meanwhile, Lewiston had a strong showing in finishing fourth (195), while Mt. Ararat’s 115 points were good for fifth, just ahead of EL (100) and Cony (95).

“Hey, half of these kids don’t swim on a regular basis, like on the Long Reach team, so this is their state meet,” said Mt. Ararat coach Mike “Smitty” Smith. “I had 15 girls swimming in the 50 free, and 12 of them set personal bests, so that is definitely a positive for us.”

Tim Blair paced Brunswick, winning the 50 freestyle in 23.35 and touching first in the 100 free (51.90).

Other Dragon winners were Derek Nesbit (one-meter diving, 195.60 points) and the 200 freestyle relay team (1:38.73).

Dan Jacques was second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.16), Joe Blair second in the 200 individual medley (2:14.36) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.67), Theron Wilgus took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.45) and the 200 medley relay team was second in 1:50.

James Wells, who was named Male Swimmer of the Meet, captured individual wins in both the 100 butterfly (51.43) and 200 free (1:45.28). He shared two more wins in relays, helping the 200 medley relay squad of Ryan Banger, Jake Olsen and Albin Werwaiss to a victory in 1:47.54, and anchoring the 400 freestyle relay team, which touched in 3:34.80.

Banger finished second in the breaststroke (1:10.35) and third in the 500 free (5:26.90), Olsen was third twice (50 free — 24.46, 100 free — 53.53) and Werwaiss managed a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:04.99).

For Mt. Ararat, Peter Burtt earned runner-up spots in the 100 butterfly (59.29) and the 500 freestyle (5:25.85).

Girls

The Morse girls captured all three relays, starting off the festivities with a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.83. Buczkowski, Guerin Morissette, Rebecca Bonnett and Morgan McDonough shared the workload, and the 200 free and 400 free relays touched in 1:46.74 and 4:03.55, respectively.

Buczkowski was victorious in the 100 free (54.78) and placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.40), while Bonnett touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:03.45).

Morissette was second in the 50 free in 26.81 and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.49), while Caitlin Foster took third in the 500 free (5:57.24).

Jessica Russell was a double winner for third-place Brunswick, capturing the 100 backstroke (1:00.16) and 200 freestyle (1:57.89).

Dragons swimmer Kayla Purinton took home the diving honors with 275.55 points, edging out Mt. Ararat’s Kendra Skelton (238.30) and Evelyn Dickinson (224.10).

The Dragons earned a pair of third-place showings in the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay.

Mt. Ararat picked up some points when Celia Ouellette swam away from the field to capture the 50 free in 25.81.

Edward Little swimmer Melissa Paione was named the Female Swimmer of the Meet after winning the 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

The Class A State Championships are slated to be held at Bowdoin College, with the boys hitting the pool on Feb. 15 and the girls on Feb. 16.
