Mt. Ararat’s Emma Wood takes Class A ski title
RUMFORD — Emma Wood of Mt. Ararat High School took first place in Thursday’s Freestyle Nordic Skate at Black Mountain in the 2012 Class A State Skiing Championships.
Wood crossed the finish line in 14:56.7, 23 seconds ahead of runner-up Sarah Wade of Mt. Blue, with Abby Popenoe of Portland in third.
The Eagle girls wound up in eighth place out of 10 scoring teams with 244 points. Leavitt’s 62 points won the competition, with Portland (122 points), Mt. Blue (126), Falmouth ( 135), Oxford Hills ( 141), Windham ( 222), Edward Little (227), Fryeburg Academy (303) and Greely (312) rounding out the field.
Also skiing for Mt. Ararat were Margaret Bouchard (27th, 18:03.5), Kaitlin Volk (48, 21:18.6), Laurel Streeter (54, 22:22.6), Morgan Martin (56, 23:49.8) and Eloise Melcher (58, 29:40.2).
Silas Eastman of Fryeburg Academy won the boys title in 11:48.11, with Jay Lesser of Falmouth leading a trio of Yachtsmen across the finish line in succession.
Falmouth took the top honors with 69 points, followed by Oxford Hills (114), Fryeburg Academy (128), Portland (128) and Leavitt (227) in the top five.
EL (301), Greely (312), Deering (319), Mt. Ararat (326) and Hampden Academy (373) also posted team scores.
For the Eagles, Sam Wood was the top finisher in 13:16.42, good for 12th place. Other Mt. Ararat competitors were Nathan Mckenzie (42, 15:30.8), Thomas Emerson (54, 17:06), Connor Read (59, 18:19.5), Kellen Radulski (60, 18:26.4) and Jonah Levy (64, 20:51.4).
The teams returned to Black Mountain today for the Slalom portion of the event, with the girls at 9:30 a.m. and the boys at 12:45 p.m.
