Charter school goes to public

Harpswell Coastal Academy seeking to recruit students
The Times Record

A new charter school has scheduled three meetings to offer information to prospective students, starting Monday.

Harpswell Coastal Academy plans to open in September with 30 sixth-graders and 30 ninth-graders, according to its website. Parents must submit an online “declaration of intent to enroll” form by 5 p.m. Thursday, March 28. Print versions of the form will be available at the information sessions.

In the event there are more students seeking admission than available slots, the school would conduct a lottery at 3 p.m. Friday, March 29. Students who don’t make it for 2013-14 would be placed on a waiting list in the order they are drawn.

“If a student from among the first 30 drawn chooses not to enroll, that spot will be offered to the lowest-numbered remaining student from the waiting list,” school officials said on the school’s website.

Harpswell Coastal Academy’s application received a unanimous 7-0 vote of the Maine Charter School Commission on Feb. 5.

The school proposes a “project-based and placebased” curriculum “to engage all learners — those who’ve been successful in school, those who have struggled, and those who have done OK, but may be inspired by engaging on a daily basis with Harpswell’s farms, fisheries and forests.”

The information sessions provide an opportunity for potential students and their families to “learn about our curriculum, our timeline for recruiting our first classes and our transportation options,” according to an announcement about the event.

Attendees can also meet Harpswell Coastal Academy board members and the school’s Community Advisory Committee members, prospective staff, and other families who are considering sending their children to the school.

The schedule for the information sessions is:

— Monday, Feb. 25, 7 p.m., Winter Street Center, 880 Washington St., Bath.

— Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m., Freeport Community Library, 10 Library Drive, Freeport

— Monday, March 4, 7 p.m., Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St., Brunswick

Harpswell Coastal Academy asks individuals to email the school at info@harpswellcoastalacademy.org to let it know which session they will attend.
