Brunswick cruiser involved in wreck

BRUNSWICK — A Brunswick police cruiser was hit from behind while stopped for a pedestrian Thursday.

The two-vehicle crash happened at 5:25 p.m., at Mill and Cumberland streets. Brunswick police Lt. Tom Garrepy said a 2013 Chevrolet Caprice cruiser driven by Officer Mark Steele was stopped for a pedestrian, with a car in front of him, at a crosswalk on Mill Street.

Garrepy said Steele saw a 2000 Jeep traveling west on Mill Street that wasn’t going to stop. He took evasive measures, attempting to drive around the car in front of him, but the Jeep struck the back of the cruiser. The car in front of the cruiser was not involved in the crash.

The Jeep was driven by Ann Beckwith, 52, of Westbrook. Garrepy said she was not charged. No one was injured; Steele was evaluated briefly at a hospital.
