Falmouth man charged with murder of mother
The Maine State Police have charged a Falmouth man with murder in connection with the shooting death of his mother at their home on Edgewater Drive late Friday afternoon.
Andrew Leighton, 44, was charged early this morning following his release from Maine Medical Center where he was taken for an evaluation, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the State Police. Leighton will spend the weekend at the Cumberland County Jail and will face his first court appearance either Monday or Tuesday.
Leighton was taken into custody about 11 p.m. after he surrendered to police following a standoff at the house, which he shared with his parents. The body of his 68-year-old mother, Shirley Leighton, was found in the living room. An autopsy will be performed Sunday at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta.
The shooting was reported to police by Thomas Leighton, 71, who discovered the violence after returning home from walking his dog in the neighborhood Friday afternoon. State Police detectives have been at the home throughout the early morning hours and were expected to return later today with a search warrant to continue the investigation.
