Freeport to mull new motto
What’s in a name? Freeport will begin to find out July 9.
Town Council Vice Chairwoman Kristina Egan said Tuesday that town officials will discuss the possibility of establishing a new town motto in a meeting at 5:45 p.m. July 9.
A regular Town Council meeting will follow.
Last month, residents learned the town will need to find a new motto because it’s no longer the ‘‘birthplace of Maine.’’
The debunked motto that became a local legend is being removed from town documents and websites following a Town Council vote.
As the story went, representatives from the Joint Commission of Massachusetts and Maine met at the Jameson Tavern, established in 1779, to discuss separating into individual states.
That’s what it said on a plaque outside the tavern, at least.
But now that claim has been invalidated. Even the Daughters of the American Revolution, which installed the plaque acknowledge the claim was wrong.
