Ellsworth leads Maine Senior Amateur; area golfers in hunt

BRUNSWICK — Tom Ellsworth bogeyed his first two holes of the day, but rallied with four birdies to shoot a 2-under par 70 to lead after the first round of the 2015 Maine Senior Amateur Championship, being held at Brunswick Golf Club.

Ellsworth, who plays out of Falmouth Country Club, use to belong to the Brunswick course and put his knowledge to use by carding a flawless 34 on his second nine of the day. Paul Pelletier (Sable Oaks) sits one shot behind after shooting the only other under-par round of the day with a 71.

Rounding out today’s final pairing is Biddeford-Saco Ron Dery, who sits at even par with Mike Doucette and Bath’s Gary Laliberte.

The course was there for the taking, with very little wind early and pure greens that made holing putts very possible. This was reflected in the scores as 14 players sit within five shots of Ellsworth’s lead,

In addition to the crystal trophy that goes to the victor, the winner will also receive an exemption into next year’s Maine Amateur Championship and an invitation to the Maine Tri-State team.

Also from the local area, Wayne Fillion of Brunswick shot a 1-over 73 to sit three shots out of the lead, with Bath Golf Club’s Jeff Turner of Dresden at 4-over 76. Brunswick’s Doug Self shot 77, Topsham native and Bath Golf Club member Reid Birdsall 78, Jack Harkins of Brunswick 79, Josh Katz of Brunswick at 83, Jeff Sweet of Topsham and Brunswick Golf Club an 86 and South Freeport native John Lincoln finished at 90.

Round two is under way, with the leaders teeing off at 11:30 a.m.
