Ex-mayor who tossed Vaseline at LePage seeks Senate seat

The Associated Press

The former Biddeford mayor who last year brought a town hall meeting to a halt by throwing a jar of Vaseline in Gov. Paul LePage's direction is running for the Maine Senate.

Joanne Twomey, an outspoken critic of the Republican governor, says she will run for the Senate seat now held by Sen. David Dutremble, a Democrat who is not seeking re-election.

In 2013, LePage used a sexually vulgar phrase referring to Vaseline when criticizing a Democratic senator.

At a LePage public forum last April, Twomey tussled with security before flipping the jar onstage.

She considers the incident a "badge of honor."

Twomey so far is the only Democrat who has announced she will run. She served in the Maine House from 1998 until 2006 and as Biddeford mayor from 2007 to 2011.
