Noting Religious Holidays Helps School Communities

In regard to the issue concerning religious holidays, I write as a former educator and Diversity Coordinator at a K-12 school. We found that having the religious holidays on the school calendar not only helped teachers and administrators with their planning, but it also enriched the life of the whole school body including the families of students. It increased the understanding of students about the differences in religious cultures, and better prepared them for life in a diverse world.

The diversity of Maine is considerably less than much of this country. This is one simple we can increase our young people’s preparedness for greater diversity not only in Brunswick, but elsewhere in the world.
