Mt. Ararat athletic field vandalized

Times Record Staff

Topsham police have been investigating vandalism at one of Mt. Ararat High School’s athletic practice fields. Topsham Police Chief Chris Lewis said School Administrative District 75 Facilities Director Chris Shaw found a vehicle tearing up the field at 5:17 a.m. Wednesday.

Mt. Ararat High School Principal Donna Brunette said school fields are often targets of vandalism. In this case, Shaw caught the culprit in the act. He found the vehicle on the practice field on Republic Avenue. It drove away, however, Shaw said he was able to give police a description of the vehicle and license plate number.

She said the field will require repair, which the district will likely do. She didn’t have a cost estimate. Brunette said the school district is working with Topsham police on the matter.

The field is used in the fall for football and for lacrosse. This week is spring vacation.

Lewis didn’t have further information as to whether the person responsible was found or charged.
