Swinging Bridge selected as Hannaford Helps beneficiary

The Times Record

Save Our Swinging Bridge.Org, a nonprofit committed to maintaining the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge, has been selected as a beneficiary of the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag Program for the month of September.

This program is designed to support local nonprofits. For every blue Hannaford Helps reusable bag purchased at the Topsham Fair Mall Hannaford, Save Our Swinging Bridge.Org will receive a $1 donation in order to help fulfill its mission of ensuring the maintenance and beautification of the historic pedestrian bridge connecting Brunswick and Topsham.

“Hannaford Helps Bag Program helps us with donations and more visibility for our organization,” said Save Our Swinging Bridge.Org Chair William Brillant.

Save Our Swinging Bridge.Org aims to raise $200 during September, which is equivalent to 200 bags bought in support of Save Our Swinging Bridge.Org. The organization plans to add the projected funds to the swinging bridge maintenance fund.

Topsham has a bag fee ordinance in place that requires food sale stores to charge customers 5 cents for each plastic and paper bag. A citizen group put the ordinance before voters last November as a result of a citizen petition process in hopes of removing harmful bags from the environment and encouraging local consumers to switch to reusable bags.
