Amory McLellan Patten

Amory McLellan Patten, 87, of Harpswell, Maine, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2018.

Pat Patten was born in Lewiston, Maine, to Bryant McLellan Patten and Arabelle Hamilton Patten on October 16, 1930.

He studied mechanical engineering and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity while at the University of Maine, Orono. During that time he met his wife of 64 years, Miriam (Mimi) Patten.

Pat and Mimi married on June 28, 1953, during a military delay en route and were then kept apart for 527 days by the U.S. Army and the Korean War. When finally reunited, they remained inseparable.

Pat worked for New England Telephone Co. for 30 years, then he and Mimi retired to coastal Maine in 1986 to spend time with friends and family and wide-ranging travels. Pat also enjoyed woodworking, lobstering in Casco Bay, and skiing at Sugarloaf.

Though Pat was a man of few words, they all counted. He was an imaginative storyteller and some of his and his family’s happiest moments were spent around the dining table, eating lobster, and listening to Pat regale the crowd with exploits from his childhood, his adventurous college years, and his fulfilling marriage. His loving support, his thoughtful advice, and his dry sense of humor are sorely missed.

Pat is survived by his wife Mimi and his children and their spouses — Elizabeth Patten and Michael Boucher of Freeport, ME; Barbara Patten Maffucci and Douglas Maffucci of Bar Harbor, ME; and Bryant M. Patten II and Tammie Patten of Hanover, NH. He is also survived by six grandchildren — Tyler and Miles Boucher; Enrica and Tessa Maffucci; and Eleanor and Ross Patten. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara Wells.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CHANS Hospice or Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue.
