Pats waive ex-Colt Addai, sign two vets before camp

On the eve of another training camp, the New England Patriots released one notable veteran and added two others.

New England cut former Indianapolis running back Joseph Addai on Wednesday, and signed tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and defensive lineman Tim Bulman.

Addai, 29, was signed by the Patriots as a free agent on May 10 following a six-year career with Indianapolis.

The Seattle Seahawks locked up center Max Unger beyond the 2012 season after signing the anchor of their offensive line to a multiyear extension.

The Green Bay Packers released veteran safety Charlie Peprah a day before their first training camp practice, apparently over concern about a lingering knee injury.

Receiver Mike Wallace, a restricted free agent, was a no-show as Pittsburgh opened training camp without Hines Ward.

Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, the Bengals’ top drat pick, will miss the start of training camp with a leg injury.

BASEBALL

FCBL: Michael Cleary scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Boston Langley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to lift Old Orchard Beach (17-24) to a 6-5 win over Pittsfield (20-21) at Old Orchard Beach.

NECBL: Stephen Catalina gave up one run on four hits, striking out four over six innings to earn the win as Danbury (21-15) held on for a 4-3 win over Sanford (12-21) at Danbury, Conn.

HOCKEY

NHL: The NHL finished presenting a majority of its proposals in labor negotiations, and is waiting for a response from the NHL Players’ Association.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Hornets, Suns and Timberwolves agreed to a multiplayer trade sending 7-foot center Robin Lopez and forward Hakim Warrick from Phoenix to New Orleans, while moving forward Wesley Johnson and a first-round draft pick from Minnesota to Phoenix, a person familiar with the deal said.

The deal also sends guard Jerome Dyson and retiring center Brad Miller’s $5.1 million contract from New Orleans to Minnesota, allowing the Timberwolves to clear space under the NBA’s salary cap as they pursue free agents. Minnesota also will receive two second-round draft picks from New Orleans, while the Hornets will receive cash.

The Utah Jazz agreed to terms of a contract with guard Randy Foye, a six-year veteran.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Suspended NASCAR driver A.J. Allmendinger said he will participate in a recovery program, a sign that he wants to get back to racing as soon as possible and avoid a drawn-out fight over the accuracy of his failed drug test.

Allmendinger said he will participate in NASCAR’s anti-drug program, which includes an evaluation by a substance abuse professional, counseling and rehabilitation.

SOCCER

FENWAY FRIENDLY: Michael Bradley and Alessandro Florenzi scored second-half goals to lift Italy’s Roma to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in a preseason friendly at Fenway Park.

Bradley sent a right-footed shot past keeper Brad Jones that caromed into the goal off the left post in the 63rd minute.

Florenzi scored off a rebound from directly in front of goal in the 69th minute.

Charlie Adam scored in the 80th minute for Liverpool.
